Alice Cake

20181116_195635.jpgWho was Alice, and why was there a cake named for her?  We may never know, but the previous owner of Maud C. Cook’s Encyclopedia for the Home, 1902 saw fit to write out the recipe and keep it between the pages.  It sounds like a nice vanilla cake, but with very sketchy instructions, you’d better be a confident cook to try it!

Alice Cake

  • two tablespoons lard
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 3 level spoons b. powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Cream, add egg + sugar.  Sift dry articles together, add to mixture.
